Approval of Fund Raising Projects & Collection Drives

The OSLC constitution requires church council approval of all fund raising activities at church. At a recent meeting, the council asked the mission cabinet to administer this provision of the constitution. Therefore, from now on, any fund raising activities or collection drives (for food, clothing, etc.) must be approved in advance by both the mission cabinet and the church council. A new form has been developed for seeking approval of such activities. Forms may be obtained in the church office.

Mission of the Month

Mission of the Month:
Rockford Reachout Jail Ministry

“I was in prison and you came to me…”
Matthew 25:36

The Rockford Reachout Jail Ministry (RRJM), founded in 1973, is a faith based organization that ministers to men, women and youth in jail in Winnebago County Correctional Facilities and helps them reintegrate back into society after incarceration. The focus of the organization is to reduce recidivism and help inmates become productive members of our community.

Programs are offered to adult inmates including chaplain services, Bible studies, relapse prevention programs, family assistance and pre-release planning. Four full time chaplains are on-site at the Main Jail providing pastoral care and helping inmates develop their relationship with Jesus Christ.

Services for youth include chaplain services but also consist of discussion groups and counseling that fosters youth development, youth empowerment, character development and risk avoidance. The mission is to see the lives of at-risk youth transformed through a message of love, hope and encouragement. The youth learn about violence and gang lifestyle. Statistics show that, by the age of 21, 98% of all gang members are either dead, in prison or injured for life by a wound from gang activities. Through the RRJM’s “Men of War” program, former gang members who have changed their lives teach the youth how to avoid the influence of gangs.

The RRJM also conducts summer leadership programs for at-risk youth.

25% of RRJM’s funding comes from Rockford area churches including OSLC. Together, RRJM and Rockford area churches are changing the lives of at-risk youth in our community.

Mission Trip 2012

A big THANK YOU to those who expressed interest in joining OSLC’s adult mission trip this year. Due to many connections with families and friends in North Dakota, it was decided to go to the town of Minot to assist Lutheran Disaster Response in restoring homes after historic flooding last June. The Mouse River rose to a record high, flooding over 4,000 homes. The last flood of that magnitude was 35 years ago. The trip is tentatively set for June 9-16, 2012. A planning meeting will be held Saturday, February 4 at 9:30 AM in the Patio Room. Please feel free to join us at the meeting. For information, call Judi Nichols (815-229-5554) or Russ Jecklin (815-654-0997).

Reverse Offering
The Mission Cabinet thanks the congregation for its generosity during the last Reverse Offering. A total of 1,363 pounds of non-perishable items was delivered to the Rock River Valley Pantry! The weekend of February 11 and 12 we will once again conduct a Reverse Offering with the food items being collected February 18 and 19. God’s work. Our hands.
